The Best Shows to Get You Started On Your K-Drama Journey

K-Drama

K-drams like Squid Game and All of Us Are Dead really took the world by storm. Forget K-drama fans, even people who hadn’t stepped into the world of K-dramas were taken aback by the excellent storyline and acting. Suddenly, everyone wanted to learn Korean! Of course, it wasn’t just these two shows that attracted attention, but we have some others to thank as well like the movie Parasite, Train to Busan, and the biggest boyband in the world, BTS.

Because of all these, everyone has gained more interest in Korean music, shows, movies, culture, language, etc. If you also want to get on this bandwagon, then we have just the list of K-dramas that you can watch to start your journey! Thanks to the popularity of these dramas, you won’t need to look for sites to watch with English subtitles, rather you will find them on Netflix.

All you need to do is choose a day and time, choose the right internet connection (preferably fiber), pick the right drama, and binge-watch! After all, there’s no fun in watching one episode each day and certainly not with slow internet.

If you do want to switch to a good internet connection, try !

A Business Proposal

A Business Proposal is a K-drama that is based on a popular webtoon. This drama is a very typical story and has classic romance tropes, making it somewhat predictable. However, it still has its unexpected and funny moments that will make you want to keep watching despite knowing what will happen in the end. It is a classic and lighthearted rom-com drama.

The heroine of the drama, Shin Ha-Ri, is an employee at Go Food, a food company in Seoul, Korea. She ends up on a blind date with the CEO of Go Food, Kang Tae-Moo, in place of her friend, Jin Young-Seo. Luckily for her, she is in a disguise and thinks she will never run into Tae-Moo again after this one intentionally-botched first date. And boy, is she wrong about that!

As in every fantasy rom-com world, she happens to run into him everywhere within and outside the company as well. And so, chaos and hilarity ensue. Throw in some romance to the mix as well, and it becomes the perfect delightful show to watch!

Strong Woman Do Bong Soon

Strong Woman Do Bong Soon is another K-drama that has the classic love triangle trope and romance. The heroine of the story, Do Bong-Soon, is unnaturally strong as she comes from a long line of powerful women who have been blessed with that power. What was once a gift, is now a burden, especially in the modern world, where Bong-Soon has to continuously hide her powers. What’s more is that they have to be careful not to misuse that power, or they might be cursed.

However, Bong-Soon finally finds a good use for her powers when she is hired by An Min-Hyuk, CEO of a gaming company, as his bodyguard. Initially, they both hate each other and just share a professional relationship. During this time, Min-Hyuk also finds out about Bong-Soon’s crush on her friend, In Gook-Doo, and keeps teasing her about it.

The drama is a collection of funny scenes, thanks to Min-Hyuk’s childlike nature and Bong-Soon’s cuteness. However, the drama is not entirely lighthearted and has its fair share of action and thriller scenes. Nonetheless, it just makes it more interesting to watch as it changes from funny scenarios to action ones.

Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok Joo

Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok Joo is a coming-of-age story about a group of athletes in college trying to fulfill their dreams, find love, and grow up. Kim Bok-Joo, the heroine of this drama, is a weightlifting athlete at a sports university. She meets Jung Joo-Hyuk, a swimming athlete at the same university, by chance. They don’t have the best first impression of each other, but soon enough, they recognize each other as childhood friends.

Bok-Joo tries her best to ignore him, while Joo-Hyuk is happy to see her. This is the beginning of their reluctant friendship as Joo-Hyuk always finds joy in teasing her, and she keeps trying to avoid him. By chance, Bok-Joo runs into Joo-Hyuk’s older brother, Jung Jae-Yi, and develops a crush on him. Joo-Hyuk finds out and finds another reason to tease her, but he also occasionally helps her out as well.

As the story develops, Joo-Hyuk is the first one to catch feelings for Bok-Joo. The story is a light-hearted rom-com series and it does contain a few emotional and dark sides to the characters. Overall, it is a very entertaining drama to watch with relatable scenarios, in some cases and extremely funny ones at other times too.

Vincenzo

Vincenzo is one of those popular K-dramas that caused quite a ruckus in the international market as well. This drama also shot to fame almost as soon as it was aired. The theme of the story is about lawyers and mafias if that makes sense together. Believe it or not, Vincenzo is a lawyer, who is also an Italian mafia consigliere. He was adopted as a kid, explaining the weird mix between his Korean roots and Italian connection.

The drama is full of mystery, action, and of course, comedy. You will even find romance added to the mix, however, it is not laid on thick as it usually is in K-dramas. The hero and heroine of the story are a peculiar couple, but not as peculiar as the other characters in this show, which is why chaos is at its fullest at all times!

Overall, It May be Said…

K-dramas are a whole different genre or style of story-telling. Most people might think they can be pretty unrealistic at times, but that’s kind of the point sometimes, right? And if you don’t think K-dramas are your style, then that’s a personal preference. However, for those who do like them, they know how funny and comedic they can get, leading them to be the best solution with ice cream, especially when they’re feeling down.

Oh, and you might also get an unnecessarily high craving for Korean street food like Ramen and Tteokbokki when watching them! You have been warned!
